There are many phenomenal reasons to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but the benefits are not always obvious to someone who has never stepped foot onto the sacred mats. So this week, we are going to look at the various benefits for training BJJ and why you need to start now to change your life.

To become great at the moves, you will need to become dedicated to practising and repping and drilling the moves over and over, and this attention to detail will make all areas of your life more efficient and effective.


  • Good replaces bad – BJJ training becomes addictive. You will love your time on the mats, as you learn more about the sport, and more importantly about yourself and what you are truly capable of. You tend to find the mindless habits you once had, like smoking or drinking, are replaced by training, and becoming a star at BJJ!
  • Find your Zen – Martial arts are fantastic to help teach you how to control your emotions, by practising the various positions and learning that you are far more capable than you ever thought possible, your confidence in your abilities will sky-rocket and you will learn to be at peace with yourself.

Why Train Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a question I asked some of my students and what has it done for them. Most responded with things like, “I lost so much 

weight,” or, “My body is so much more flexible now.” Some talk about how much strength they have gained or how they are in better shape. The fact that Brazilian jiu-jitsu will change your body cannot be denied. You can physically see your body changing with every day or week. What you can’t see is the improvements in your overall health as a result of training.”

For me, the benefits of jujitsu have been many. Firstly and most obviously physical benefits have been incredible. 14 years ago when I registered with my current GP and at that point, I was told my blood pressure was high and if I didn’t wake up, I’d need medication but I didn’t change. By simply doing jujitsu for about 10 years, when I saw my GP, I was told that my blood pressure was absolutely transformed and not only that but my heart rate was at the level that they would expect of an athlete. As someone who was 54 and who spends his days sitting at a desk or talking to people in meetings, this has been quite incredible to be told that I have a heart rate of an athlete.

Psychologically jujitsu really helps everyone to really come to terms with who they are as a person. It helps us all develop an idea of a room for abilities but also how to get over and get beyond barriers that we see in front of us. The practice of jujitsu involves regular live sparring with other people. That means that whoever good we are however long we have trained we find that others will overcome us at times. This process of getting knocked down teaches us to get back up again. This is a very important lesson and very good for psychological health and helping us to deal with the notes that we take in everyday life. The other major psychological benefit of jujitsu is the problem-solving element within it.jiu-jitsu is like physical chess, we must develop our strategy and then deal with the barriers that we find placed in front of us. This problem-solving process is one that we then take off the mat as important skills in the rest of our lives.

Finally, jiu-jitsu is a social activity bringing us into contact with others. I have found that I know a wide range of people through jiu-jitsu that I would never have known otherwise. I once read of a musician who as part of a recovery process from drug and alcohol issues had taken up martial arts. He talked of the “spiritual healing of martial arts” and that is a concept I can certainly relate to. No one can practice jiu-jitsu on their own. The process of getting together with others to learn and develop creates a common purpose. That purpose enriches lives.”

CLASS FOCUS: Personal Training w/ Prof Gillon

This week, we will be looking at our highly sought after personal training sessions with Professor Gillon.


BJJ is a thoroughly enjoyable sport and one that will develop participants, mentally, physically and emotionally.

However, there is a wide range of techniques, concepts, guards, submissions, passes, escapes etc to learn and it is not always possible to gather an extensive understanding of each from participating in lessons only. You can gain an understanding of the moves but sometimes it is hard to learn all the little parts that can bring your BJJ game from good to amazing.

Therefore, we recommend all students should sign up for a private lesson to really take your training to the next level. It is an opportunity to learn the little touches and fixes that will allow you to improve and develop no matter your starting point, by working with Professor Gillon and have exclusive focus and training. You can gain a general understanding from the classes but it is in the personal lessons where your understanding of and ability to perform will reach new heights.

All GB Glasgow students, all students who are looking to improve their skills, techniques, and understanding of BJJ game and competing. It doesn’t matter whether you are a white or brown belt, all students can take something from a personal lesson.

You do not need to be fit to begin, you do not need to have been training for a set period. All students can attend and learn from the experience. Professor Gillon will work with each student and structure a training programme for your needs, teaching the required techniques and concepts in an understandable and enjoyable way, which will really stay with you and improve your BJJ game considerably.

  • A personal approach where Professor Gillon discusses with the student about what they hope to achieve and will provide honest feedback on how they can fix problems, learn more advanced techniques or streamline the basics and look to develop and work towards the next grade or tab.

I started private jui jitsu sessions with Ricky a year and a half ago, and it brought my BJJ on leaps and bounds. Ricky is a great coach with a wealth of knowledge and makes training enjoyable, as well as teaching techniques that actually work.

Getting one to one sessions allows you to focus on specific areas that you wish to improve. I would highly recommend to everyone!

I have been training at Gracie Barra Glasgow for a couple of months now, but I had my first private training session with Prof. Gillon (or Ricky) on Saturday. We did fundamental training with different passes. He stressed and demonstrated the importance of understanding positioning as well correcting my technique.

I was worried about not ever being strong enough since I am of average height and weight as well as being new to jiu-jitsu, but he taught me small variations and techniques and made them relevant to my situation. I not only enjoyed myself while training with him but also learned a lot in that hour. His patience and positive attitude to new students is truly amazing and it makes me want to keep coming back.

If you are new to jiu-jitsu, I would highly recommend Gracie Barra Glasgow. But if you are starting out and want to get all your fundamentals firmly in place, I would definitely recommend training with Ricky.

This class is ideal for those people who are bored with the gym and need something more challenging. It is a chance to develop your fitness, in a fun environment, to some great music.

This is a tough class but it is staggered in a set way to build your confidence and mental strength and learn how to push yourself further each week. You will learn how to keep your chin up, try for one more rep, one more swing or to go that little bit harder. Professor Gillon will help you discover your true ability and what you are capable of.

There is a strong team spirit in the class, and the class will help keep you motivated and pushing towards your goal.

Professor Gillon has a long history of training BJJ practitioners, fitness participants and everything in between, and will help you get into shape, regardless of the point you start from.

Professor Lagarto Seminar in February


Gracie Barra Scotland is honoured to host a seminar with the world-famous BJJ practitioner, Professor Lucio Rodrigues.


Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and known traditionally as ‘Lagarto’, (which means lizard in Portuguese), Professor Lagarto is a former world champion, and direct student of the legendary Carlos Gracie, Jr. He is a 4th degree Black Belt and Head Instructor at Gracie Barra Fulham.



Each seminar, Professor Lagarto focuses on a particular area of BJJ and teaches high-level concepts and movements, in his warm and humble way and it is not possible to leave without developing your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, regardless of the level that you begin at.

The seminar will consist of practising various fundamental skills development, evolutions of basic guards and passes, partner work and much, much more.

This is an exciting opportunity to train with a giant of the sport and learn directly from a former student of one of the BJJ masters.

The seminar will be held at Gracie Barra Glasgow 40 Broomielaw, Glasgow, Scotland, G1 4QN.

Competition training is coming

There are many reasons to begin BJJ. Some start to get fit, some to learn self-defence, others to make new friends. However, there is a number, who join to compete, to test themselves against others, to seek where their limit is, the effectiveness of their technique and where they compare to other BJJ practitioners.

With this in mind, GB Glasgow is delighted to announce the beginning of a new competition team with specialist training for team members.

The training:

  • Classes are scheduled to begin in early January after the festive break.
  • Is aimed at those pupils who wish to compete in local, national or international level.
  • Is open to all GB Glasgow current Pupils who are at ‘three tab’ white belt or above, with regular attendance at the GB2 classes also a requirement.
  • Is competition focused, with advanced conditioning components, point scoring, technique drills, sparring development and high-intensity competitive rolling.

Please note, it is not mandatory for you to attend these classes. However, these classes are on offer to those students who wish to compete against others at various competition levels. Students who wish to join the team will need to prove their motivation, consistency and desire by becoming an athlete and by taking their BJJ evolution serious.

For those students who wish to join but do not currently feel ready, a development plan can be organised and discussed with Professor Gillon, to help you reach the required level. Please discuss this at your next class.

Introducing the Ultimate BJJ Training Package

BJJ is a very technical sport, with many aspects affecting your overall success and development. Your understanding of technique, your fitness, your understanding of the key concepts of BJJ and so much more, will have an effect on your BJJ journey, the color of your belt and overall success in BJJ.

To assist you on your journey, no matter your current level, we are introducing a brand new training package, which has been set up to help you develop yourself as a BJJ practitioner in the fastest time possible. Additionally, a Gillon Fitness free fitness consultation is available on request and additional gym training sessions are available at an additional cost.


The Ultimate Training Package is available to all students at a cost of £100 per month.

Introducing our new women’s only training sessions

We are proud to announce the introduction of our new women’s only training sessions at Gracie Barra Scotland.

In today’s society, we believe it is important that all women feel confident, strong and capable and learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the key to unlocking this evolution.

Each session will be led by women for women. The sessions will focus on key self-defense techniques as well as the fundamental concepts of BJJ in a safe and controlled environment. You will have the chance to learn new skills, make new friends and learn about yourself, along with some great music and fun.

These sessions will be run by our resident women’s coach Kimberley Gillon. Kimberley is a purple belt BJJ practitioner and a personal trainer at Gillon Fitness. She is an expert in teaching BJJ and runs our popular strength and conditioning classes. Kimberly is committed to showcasing the life-changing benefits of BJJ to the women of Glasgow.
