Class Focus: Fitness & Conditioning

Your success at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is dependant on a number of key concepts. You will spend the beginning learning the techniques and procedures but it is the additional work you put in as you progress, that will determine if you go from good to great.

Here at Gracie Barra Scotland, we are proud to offer a number of classes to assist participants to make this progression. We will be running a new feature on the classes available and which ones would be best for you to participate in:

Suitable for

Anyone who wants to improve their fitness and overall conditioning, by developing their cardio-vascular endurance, strength, speed and muscle development.

This class is ideal for those club members who are looking to improve their endurance for rolling, speed and flexibility for transitioning between positions etc.

Those students who are looking to compete and need to become fitter athetically.

This class is ideal for those people who are bored with the gym and need something more challenging. It is a chance to develop your fitness, in a fun environment, to some great music.

Key Notes

The challenges set evolve each week and keep things fun, challenging and motivating.

There are set challenges which are focused on the individual and with a partner.

This is a tough class but it is staggered in a set way to build your confidence and mental strength and learn how to push yourself further each week. You will learn how to keep your chin up, try for one more rep, one more swing or to go that little bit harder. Professor Gillon will help you discover your true ability and what you are capable of.

There is a strong team spirit in the class, and the class will help keep you motivated and pushing towards your goal.

Professor Gillon has a long history of training BJJ practitioners, fitness participants and everything in between, and will help you get into shape, regardless of the point you start from.

Ricky includes kickboxing routines, kettlebells circuits and ab workouts to create a conditioning class, perfect for both someone who is new to fitness, and to the seasoned fitness fanatic. Ricky helps you push yourself to a new level of fitness, which in turn, affects your life outside of the gym. Your self-esteem and confidence skyrockets, allowing to face everyday life with more positivity and mental strength. Professor Lagarto Seminar in February

PROFESSOR LAGARTO SEMINAR IN FEBRUARY! 

Gracie Barra Scotland is honoured to host a seminar with the world-famous BJJ practitioner, Professor Lucio Rodrigues.

 

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and known traditionally as ‘Lagarto’, (which means lizard in Portuguese), Professor Lagarto is a former world champion, and direct student of the legendary Carlos Gracie, Jr. He is a 4th degree Black Belt and Head Instructor at Gracie Barra Fulham.

 

THE SEMINAR

Each seminar, Professor Lagarto focuses on a particular area of BJJ and teaches high-level concepts and movements, in his warm and humble way and it is not possible to leave without developing your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, regardless of the level that you begin at.

The seminar will consist of practising various fundamental skills development, evolutions of basic guards and passes, partner work and much, much more.

This is an exciting opportunity to train with a giant of the sport and learn directly from a former student of one of the BJJ masters.

The seminar will be held at Gracie Barra Glasgow 40 Broomielaw, Glasgow, Scotland, G1 4QN.

The seminar is open to all BJJ practitioners, including beginners, and you do not need to be a member of Gracie Barra Scotland to attend.

Competition training is coming

There are many reasons to begin BJJ. Some start to get fit, some to learn self-defence, others to make new friends. However, there is a number, who join to compete, to test themselves against others, to seek where their limit is, the effectiveness of their technique and where they compare to other BJJ practitioners.

With this in mind, GB Glasgow is delighted to announce the beginning of a new competition team with specialist training for team members.

The training:

  • Classes are scheduled to begin in early January after the festive break.
  • Is aimed at those pupils who wish to compete in local, national or international level.
  • Is open to all GB Glasgow current Pupils who are at ‘three tab’ white belt or above, with regular attendance at the GB2 classes also a requirement.
  • Is competition focused, with advanced conditioning components, point scoring, technique drills, sparring development and high-intensity competitive rolling.

Please note, it is not mandatory for you to attend these classes. However, these classes are on offer to those students who wish to compete against others at various competition levels. Students who wish to join the team will need to prove their motivation, consistency and desire by becoming an athlete and by taking their BJJ evolution serious.

For those students who wish to join but do not currently feel ready, a development plan can be organised and discussed with Professor Gillon, to help you reach the required level. Please discuss this at your next class.

Introducing the Ultimate BJJ Training Package

BJJ is a very technical sport, with many aspects affecting your overall success and development. Your understanding of technique, your fitness, your understanding of the key concepts of BJJ and so much more, will have an effect on your BJJ journey, the color of your belt and overall success in BJJ.

To assist you on your journey, no matter your current level, we are introducing a brand new training package, which has been set up to help you develop yourself as a BJJ practitioner in the fastest time possible. We believe that this is the best training package available for all students, regardless of their current level.

The new Ultimate Training Package is currently offered to beginners and current students alike. Each component of your journey has been considered and covered in the plan to ensure you develop into a highly skilled, proficient and fit BJJ student.

GB1 membership The GB1 is a beginner friendly training programme, with a focus on the fundamentals in a structured setup. The programme, will build your fitness and teach you key self-defense skills and techniques, all with a smile on your face throughout. This programme is open to everyone, regardless of previous experience or fitness level. This membership will allow access to all GB1 classes.
2 x Private Training sessions (per month)

Take your training to the next level by training on a 1-2-1 basis with your professor.

Gym use

Free unlimited gym use is included. A range of strength, conditioning, and cardio equipment is available. A gym induction will be included to ensure you can utilise the equipment for the best return possible.

Additionally, a Gillon Fitness free fitness consultation is available on request and additional gym training sessions are available at an additional cost.

 

The Ultimate Training Package is available to all students at a cost of £100 per month.

Any current students can upgrade to this offer at any time, by request to Professor Gillon or by using the website contact form and requesting an upgrade in your package.

The package will be paid via direct debit as usual and bound by the same terms and conditions as the other packages.

Christmas Opening Hours

Introducing our new women’s only training sessions

We are proud to announce the introduction of our new women’s only training sessions at Gracie Barra Scotland.

In today’s society, we believe it is important that all women feel confident, strong and capable and learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the key to unlocking this evolution.

Each session will be led by women for women. The sessions will focus on key self-defense techniques as well as the fundamental concepts of BJJ in a safe and controlled environment. You will have the chance to learn new skills, make new friends and learn about yourself, along with some great music and fun.

These sessions will be run by our resident women’s coach Kimberley Gillon. Kimberley is a purple belt BJJ practitioner and a personal trainer at Gillon Fitness. She is an expert in teaching BJJ and runs our popular strength and conditioning classes. Kimberly is committed to showcasing the life-changing benefits of BJJ to the women of Glasgow.

My Weight loss journey

I started my Gracie Barra journey in September 2014.

I walked into the gym very apprehensively. I was a very heavy guy. I was 30st and 10lb in 2014. I thought I didn’t really belong or had the right to go there as I was very unfit and not used to exercising. I would walk up one set of stairs and be out of breath. I could hardly run the length of myself. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was always something that I wanted to take part in but always had the mindset of “I need to be fit to do this”. How wrong I was. Taking part in BJJ GETS you fit.

When I walked into the gym one of the blue belt lads showed me around and really made me feel at ease. It calmed me down and made me eager to get started. During the class I was exerting myself like I hadn’t been used to before and it was a fantastic feeling. Everyone was really welcoming and my preconceived notions that people would judge me just melted away. The next class I came in and met Ricky and he couldn’t have been nicer. I remember at the time I couldn’t even wear a gi as I couldn’t get one to fit and his words ring in my memory “We’ll get you into one in no time!”

As soon as I had my first few classes, I was hooked. All I could think about was when could I get back into the gym and “what techniques are we going to be learning this week?”. I love the rolling aspect of Jiu-Jitsu as I like testing myself with other people and seeing my strengths and weaknesses. I became a Jiu-Jitsu addict.

After my first class I had signed up for a membership and would talk to anyone who would listen to me about Gracie Barra and Jiu-Jitsu. Slowly but surely, I started to get into the swing of things and I attended a seminar with Lucio “Lagarto” Rodrigues and received my first stripe on my white belt. And this may sound cheesy but it was one of the proudest moments I’ve had. The seminar was fantastic and what made the biggest impression on me that day moreso than his techniques, were his words. Very inspirational and motivating.

I work shifts which is unfortunate as I can’t have a set pattern for Jiu-Jitsu. Luckily, the schedule is really wide with Gracie Barra so I can pretty much work it around my shifts. Recently, I also started taking P.T. sessions with coach Graeme and I’m now hooked on those too. Coach Graeme pushes me to my limits, we practice technique and we have a good laugh whilst doing so. It’s that kind of attitude and those kind of moments that really keep you interested in Jiu-Jitsu, in my opinion.

Fast forward to May 2015 and I am now 24 st 2lbs. I have three stripes on my

white belt and I am aiming to compete later in the year. My weight loss journey isn’t anywhere near complete, but Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu has helped me lose a lot of weight inside a short amount of time and has helped me turn my life around. A

nd in the process of doing so, I have made a lot of really great friends and met some fantastic people. I even have people asking me about it after seeing my results.
